Materialities of Sound Technology 21-22 September 2009

Word Unbecoming Flesh is led by Ika Willis and Simon Jones. It is funded by BIRTHA (Bristol Institute for Research into the Humanities and the Arts) at University of Bristol. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, new technologies have made possible new material modes of communication, notation and literacy; new figures and metaphors through which to think transmission, memory, liveness, presence, and knowledge; and new embodied and performative practices of reception. This research project attempts to think beyond text and across media through a programme of six research events over eighteen months, each of which will include a public lecture, seminar or performance by a visiting scholar or artist.
Amplification is a research event organised by Jo Carruthers and Angela Piccini. It explores the uses of sound amplification technologies in film and literature to produce experiences of space and place and interrogates how sound technologies serve architectural and/or atmospheric ends.

This is followed by a wine reception and screening of their film, ASYLUM.
Wickham Theatre, from 5pm, screening 6.30pm.
