I don't really have any details for my project down, but it's definitely going to relate to Greek theatre. I was thinking about doing a paper on the influence of ancient Greek theatres on comtemporary ones, but I'm not so excited about that anymore. Right now, I think I'd like to write a paper sticking to the importance/significance/etc of drama and theatre in ancient Greece and how that manifested itself in the physical theatre. I'm also not married to the idea of doing a paper; I'm considering a glossary of terms but am not exactly sure what that would entail. I only have a really rough idea of what I'd like to do, but I'll try to hammer out more specifics in the upcoming week.

chris witmore: Hi Melissa, You might want to have a quick look at A Guide To Ancient Greek Drama by Ian Christopher Storey, Arlene Allan (2005). Also when you have time let's brainstorm the terms you wish to address. Keep me posted, Chris.

Melissa Mariano: Hi Chris, Thanks for the book suggestion. It doesn't seem to be listed at Stanford in the Socrates catalogue, but they have it at Berkeley, and I have a sister who goes there and can check it out for me. After going through some other books, I think I'd like to focus in on the evolution of costumes in Greek drama. That way, I can talk about the costumes in general since I like them, but also discuss how the changes in costumes related to/were influenced by the changing structure of the physical theatre and maybe social changes/trends, if applicable (I need to do more research...). Also, maybe use certain festivals/plays as case studies of these changes? I'm working on assembling a list of preliminary terms, but I just wanted to get my more refined idea up as soon as possible. Thanks for the input! ~Melissa

Melissa Mariano: In the research that I've done, I can't find much to write an extended amount about costume evolution in relation to evolution of the physical theatre and social changes. Is this just not a topic that people have looked at or consider worth studying, or am I maybe missing some important sources? Do you think I should modify my topic? If so, I could just do a glossary of terms about theatre and costumes, and not necessarily about their evolution but include info about their changes when possible and appropriate. Also, terms that I would use are things like: the Theatre of Dionysus at Athens, Theatre at Epidaurus, orchestra, skene, theatron, choregoi, etc. but if I continue with the costume topic, I would have somewhat generic sounding terms, such as masks or headdress. Are those generic terms okay? Thanks. ~Meliss
