Hey :)! So far, the project plans are to enter glossary terms for the archaeology of democracy... the gortyn law code, the pnyx, the agora, probably other state buildlings like the bouleuoterion, royal stoa, etc... still looking for more terms :)

Hi Aditi, Nice start and I would echo your interests in the other state buildings. Our timing is perfect in that The Cambridge Companion to Ancient Greek Law by Michael Gagarin and David Cohen has just been released. It is a great resource. Have you looked into ostracism? Why not also have a look at the practices associated with Greek arbitration. Here I recomend you have a look at Sheila Ager's Interstate arbitrations in the Greek world, 337-90 B.C., Berkeley, 1996. It is a bit later, but it will open up another interesting area of extra-polis mediation. Good luck, Chris

Thanks! the ostracism page looks really helpful, and I'll look up some other resources on it, as well as the other two books you mentioned :)

sample archaeopedia entry: Bouleuterion

Posted 11/24/05 at 8:55 pm
So I've done some minor editing to the Bouleuterion entry in the last couple hours... i'm still working on finding a little more detail, but I think I'm going to go ahead and get started on a couple others! Tentative list: Pynx Hill, Royal Stoa, Gortyn Law Code, Agora, Tholos, Ostracism, Kolonos Agoraios (tent), Heliaea, Peristylar Court, Strategeion... this list will be changed along the way probably, but that's a preliminary count!

I couldn't figure out how to post to archaeopedia, so here's my next entry: Tholos.
I'm thinking of organizing everything as a sort of tree from the entry for Agora... how does that sound? I thought that would be the easiest way to link all of them together, but let me know your thoughts on that~

chris witmore: Hi Aditi, excellent stuff here! I think the entries work well. Your idea of a tree structure will also suffice, but you may also organize them as a simple list. We can post an entry to archaeopaedia on Monday. See you then.

Pnyx Hill

Hi Chris, I've added two more entries to archaeopaedia if you want to go and check them out! I finished the entry for pnyx hill, and added another for ostracism. let me know if these are still along the lines of what you're looking for in glossary entries :)!

Thanks, aditi

chris witmore: Hi Aditi, I enjoyed reading your entry. Pictures will help it along if you can find some of an ostrakon or two. Also context is a good addition if you can find out more specific information about where hordes were found and in what condition. As reused materials at hand were they simply discarded afterwards, found along the Panathenaic way? These issues of use, reuse, and discard will make the entry a little more archaeological. Lastly, citation is key. Please cite your sources or suggest good references for people to go to on the subject. I added a heading for references under which you can add these. Great work! Chris

chris witmore: Hi Aditi, The entries look great and read well. For your Tholos image check out the Agora Excavations website and this [link] Also, it is a great thing to add as many links to other websites into your text as possible. The Agora excavations site has a rich archive of information for exactly this type of reference.
