The Elizabethan Period to Present Day
Above: Carew in the Elizabethan Period
Elizabethan Period
- Medieval fortress transitioned to Elizabethan manor house
- Sir John Perrot (1530-1592) responsible for the great northern range with large windows (view of Millpond)
- Perrot, owner, died in the Tower of London before reconstruction complete
Civil War Garrison
- Sir George Carew, owner
- Carew declared for the King, but it was garrisoned at different times by both royalists and parliamentarians (?)
- Changed hands four times, once after an assault
- Buildings on the south side were also slighted to prevent the enemy making further use of the site --> (How did this work exactly?)
After...(Romantic Icon)
- Castle abandoned in 1686
- Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Arfordir Penfro) leased castle and area around it for 99 years in 1983 from the Carew Estate owned by Anthongy Trollope-Bellew of Crowcombe, Somerset (a descendent of Nicholas de Carew)
- NPA restored and managed the castle and grounds: (1) conserve buildings, (2) improve their setting, (3) increase public access
- Restoration: began in 1984, team of masons, grant-aided by CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments
- The restoration programme was long-term, involving a team of masons and grant-aided by CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments
- Enironment: Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of bat population and rare plant species
- Current Site: Castle, mill, causeway, medieval bridge, picnic area, 11th-century Celtic Carew Cross
- Inhabited by bats, owls, water birds, ferns, and flowering plants; some sections closed to public to protect bats
