Chapter 5: Taking '...Thanks
For my dissertation, great thanks go to my committee, external readers and others who have made helpful suggestions and offered comments and insights on aspects of the project, or gifted me encouraging words to put the effort in perspective: Sue Alcock, Douglass Bailey, John Bender, George Cowgill, Ian Hodder (chair), Rosemary Joyce, Timothy Lenoir, Bjørnar Olsen, Ian Robertson, Linda Manzanilla, Alfredo Gonzalez-Ruibal, Michael Shanks, Michael Wilcox, Chris Witmore and Alison Wylie. For presenting the opportunity to begin what has concluded in this project, I thank Chris Tilley. I have learned much from everyone’s respective expertise. I especially want to acknowledge the careful readings and many productive criticisms I received from Ian Hodder. His patience with the project as it developed and the discussions (sometimes heated) we have had are a testament to his avuncular companionship. I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to work so closely with an individual who highly values intellectual freedom, rigor and innovation – traits not always as common in academia as we might wish. Michael Shanks has likewise been an inspiration in the perseverance of pursuing ideas which may not always be popular. Both of these gentlemen have truly been role models. As I’ve come to corroborate the truism that a dissertation, particularly the final ‘push’, is entirely consuming, I am thankful beyond expression to Amy Webmoor and BWM for reminding me of the need to strike a balance between intellectual endeavor and personal well-being. As a pedagogical process of intellectual maturation, the resulting work - its form, argument and shortcomings – remains, however, mine alone. All standard disclaimers apply.
Agradecimientos
