SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone, Inc.

http://exchanges.state.gov/culprop/index.html

US State Department website on International Cultural Property Protection for information on US responses to illegal export/ import of cultural property and more importantly with which countries the US have a legal agreement to prevent the illegal import of arch/ ethnological materials - only 11 countries out of the 103 signatories to the 1970 UNESCO convention. It's up to the state party to submit a request to the US - the US State Department then decides whether a request merits US import restrictions...

AIA Interest Group

On how to start an Interest Group at the Archaeological Institute of America:
AIA Interest Group

http://www.worldheritagealliance.org/

Their mission statement: "The World Heritage Alliance (WHA) is the cornerstone of a new, ambitious initiative of Expedia, Inc. and the United Nations Foundation to promote sustainable tourism and awareness of World Heritage sites and communities around the world. The partners believe conscientious efforts by the travel industry and its customers can contribute directly to nature conservation, historic preservation, and poverty reduction through responsible tourism.

Our goal is to engage new partners, especially in the travel industry, to join our initiative as a part of the World Heritage Alliance and catalyze a collective commitment to supporting World Heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and local economic development for communities in and around World Heritage sites."

I think perhaps the AIA's aren't the best place, not because of the lack of cutting edge research (haha), but because they already have two committees that deal with this, like Lide said: [link]

Conservation and Heritage Management Committee The Committee is charged to form liaisons between AIA and professional organizations dedicated to conservation; to promote greater awareness of the central role of conservation in archaeological fieldwork, among professional archaeologists as well as the interested public; to advise the AIA Governing Board and Committees on specific issues related to conservation; to develop colloquia for the Annual Meeting on current issues in conservation practice and theory, architectural conservation, site management and presentation, ethics, and conservation.

Cultural Property Legislation and Policy Committee The Committee shall be responsible for tracking and reporting on national and international legislation that affects archaeology; keeping up with progress on UNIDROIT, the Hague Convention, the Underwater Resources Convention, and various EEC directives; investigating and responding to issues concerning the illicit trade in antiquities; and developing timely AIA responses as necessary.

One result if this is the letter the AIA sent supporting the stop of imports from Cyprus: [link]

Sorry if this is all repeat information. Thanks for the posting of meeting notes also, it's great to at least see what is happening.

One more point though: Didn't WAC move its meeting to 2008 in Ireland? I was going to submit an abstract independently but the WAC page now points only toward 2008. Please let me know if I am mistaken!

Warmest greetings from Provence

Archaeologists for Global Justice (from Sheffield University)

More than a year after announcing the intention of creating "Archaeologists for Global Justice" (AGJ) we have finally done something about it and would be very pleased to see you joining us in this initiative.

The basic principles guiding the spirit of the group are outlined in this web page, hosted by the University of Sheffield: http://www.shef.ac.uk/archaeology/global-justice.html

As you can see the web page is still in its infancy. It can and will grow with the help of anybody keen on the existence of this informal group.

As a medium for communication between us we have also set up an email discussion list, called ARCH-JUSTICE. You can find details at the following web page, where you can also subscribe: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=ARCH-JUSTICE&X=1B45045FFDF62F70AE&Y=u.albarella%40sheffield.ac.uk. If you prefer you can also just send us an email and we will subscribe you.

As soon as we will have a decent number of subscribers we will start discussing any issues of relevance to AGJ and we will also start thinking about future intitiatives. Since we do not want to carry on emailing anybody who may not be interested, from now on your only way of keeping in touch with AGJ will be through the email discussion list.

We very much hope of getting a good response to this initial message but we will of course soon start publicizing both the group and the email discussion list more widely. In this respect we would be very grateful if you could pass on this message to as many potentially interested people as possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers, Umberto and Sarah

Buildings of Disaster

"Souvenirs are important cultural objects which can store and communicate memories, emotions and desires. Buildings of Disaster are miniature replicas of famous structures where some tragic or terrible events happened to take place"

World Heritage Alliance

From: Serena Love Subject: World Heritage alliance

I just had someone forward this link to me that I think might be relevant to this group. World Heritage Alliance

Maybe you've all heard of this and I'm just lagging behind but I thought it was cool idea and it has backing from the UN. It focuses tourism around World Heritage sites and tries to sound very "responsible", but given what Richard Leventhal had to say on Thursday, I am weary of such statements.

This is their mission statement: "The <http://www.worldheritagealliance.org/about_us.htm>World Heritage Alliance (WHA) is the cornerstone of a new, ambitious initiative of Expedia, Inc. and the United Nations Foundation to promote sustainable tourism and awareness of World Heritage sites and communities around the world.

Anyway, I just wanted to bring it to the attention of SHE, if it is of any interest to anyone.

Serena
