Lidewijde is interested in the Hellenistic, Roman, and Islamic Near East and the place of the ‘East’ in the ancient as well as in the modern world. Her dissertation deals with the relationship between provincial culture and empire in Roman Syria and the integration of this region into the Roman empire. She is also interested in the politics and ethics of fieldwork, and orientalism in archaeological studies.
