I’ll admit that the first image that leapt to my head was that of a crowd of people sitting in a movie theater, watching the play of colored light on the wall. This is unnerving, to say the least, for an unabashed cinephile such as myself. Perhaps it would be facile to point to the hall of mirrors that is our entertainment world and say “There are your shadow puppets;” perhaps not. This story begs two interpretations. One is that we fetter ourselves with the television, the Internet, and tell ourselves that we are living, when in reality we are staring at small colored boxes. The other is that we are born and die in a cave, and kill those who bring news of the light outside.
