In this ebook I have not used technical transliterations of Tamil, Oriya and Sanskrit words, which would involve the use of diacritical marks. Therefore I write ‘chauka’ rater than ‘cauka’, ‘Abhinaya Chandrika’ rather than ‘Abhinaya Candrika’ and so on. I also do not always refer to individuals following the western convention of citing their second name. Thus I write Sardono rather than Kusumo as in Indonesia it would be unthinkable and very confusing to refer to him as Kusumo. I italicise the name of dance forms/genres but I write them in lower case eg odissi, bharatanatyam (after all we do not write Ballet but ballet!).
